How to shop at the Farmer’s Market

Look online to find your local Farmer’s Market.

Pack bags and containers with you to put soft fruit or veggies and to carry heavy loads. I bring a cart that has wheels as well as a bag or two for soft goods. It’s always better to have an extra bag rather than not enough! It’s quite a sad thing to see your fresh produce smashed.

Take cash! Most farmer’s don’t have credit card processing and it’s just a hassle to make others around you wait. It is ok to use your card for larger purchases here and there so bring it in case. My way of budgeting is to not bring my card and limit myself to the cash I bring. We usually spend $80-100 depending on what we get and the seasons. When I first started I would only spend $40-50 but as I grew accustomed to the fresh weekly food and got in the habit of shopping there I learned to buy fresh sourdough bread, free range, organic cheese, local honey and other things we used to get at the store so we now bring more.

Examine, touch, and smell the food food. Try a sample. Sometimes the farmers have samples cut up and served. Other times you can ask the farmer. Farmers with good quality products are often happy to share a sample.
